Seasonal overview

❄️ Late Winter (Jan–Feb)

Start tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant indoors under lights. Sow onion seeds. Order seed catalogs.

🌱 Early Spring (Mar–Apr)

Direct sow peas, spinach, lettuce, and radishes. Transplant onion seedlings. Start cucumbers and squash indoors in Apr.

☀️ Late Spring (May–Jun)

After last frost: transplant tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, and basil. Direct sow beans and corn.

🌞 Summer (Jul–Aug)

Harvest main crops. Start a second succession of lettuce, spinach, and radishes for fall. Sow brassicas indoors in Aug.

🍂 Early Fall (Sep–Oct)

Harvest warm-season crops before first frost. Transplant fall brassicas. Sow garlic and spinach for overwintering.

🥕 Late Fall / Winter (Nov–Dec)

Final harvest of root vegetables and cold-hardy greens. Plan next year's garden.

Adjusting for your zone

  • Zone 5 or colder: Shift everything 2–4 weeks later in spring, 2–4 weeks earlier in fall.
  • Zone 7: Shift spring tasks 2 weeks earlier, enjoy a longer fall season.
  • Zone 8–9: Grow tomatoes and peppers spring and fall; use cool crops in winter.
  • Zone 10+: Plant cool-season crops Sept–Feb; heat-lovers Feb–May and Aug–Oct.
